Autism & PDD Primary Social Skills Lessons: Home by Pam Britton Reese & Nena C. Challenner

Ages: 3-8 Grades: PreK-3

One-page, rebus-supported stories teach appropriate behaviors for typical needs in the home from Morning Routine to Sharing the TV and Using the Toilet. The ready-to-use lessons have just the right amount of detail for preschool and early primary students. The concise format makes it easy to keep a copy of the lesson where the social situation occurs.

The stories consist of simple, concrete things to say and do. Each sentence in the story is supported by one or more pictures Customize the lessons by adding student-specific information, editing the text, and using a photograph in place of the generic picture in the book.

There are instructional and behavioral lessons. The instructional lessons teach young children what they need to do or say in social situations that are sometimes overwhelming (e.g., Trying New Food). The behavioral lessons target specific social behaviors that need to be stopped (e.g., I Eat My Own Food). Lessons were written with input from families of children with autism.

The lessons include these topics:

Daily RoutinesùGetting Dressed, Wearing Different Clothes, Weekend Morning, After-School Day Care, and more
Self-CareùBrushing Teeth, Clipping Fingernails, Bath Time, Using the Toilet, and more
Appliances/SafetyùThe Vacuum Cleaner, Electrical Outlets, Hot Stove, Wearing My Seatbelt, and more
Family RelationsùWatching One TV, Sharing the Computer, Pets, The Babysitter, and more
Special OccasionsùStaying Away from Home, Having Company, Time-Out, My Birthday, and more
